How to practice jiu-jitsu at home

Jiu-jitsu did not become known until the 20th century. The Brazilians reworked the Japanese form of jujitsu in the American manner, calling the new martial art jiu-jitsu. The system is good because it helps to protect anyone, even a 100-pound fat man. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is not about strength, it’s about an entire art.

This fighting system is based on the use of jabbing, throws, painful and suffocating holds. So how do you train at home? Here are a few tips.

Find a space for training

You should have a large enough space for training. It would be better to have it outdoors, in a garden or a gazebo. If you have a large garage, you can practise there too. Especially important is to have a big space at the beginning, when you are putting and perfecting your technique. If you are learning jiu-jitsu for sporting purposes you’ll put it into practice in a special place. If you are learning the system only for self-defense, you may have to defend yourself in both large and very confined spaces. The better prepared you are, the better chance you will have of repelling your enemies.

Learn the theory.

Before you begin your training sessions, read some smart books. First, there are books with detailed descriptions of certain techniques. Start, of course, should be mastering the simple. Read books about human anatomy. From them you will be able to learn about the weaknesses of the body that you could use to your advantage during the defense. Take your studies seriously. Do not leaf through books, but seriously read and dig in.

Find a partner

It’s no good practicing jiu-jitsu at home because you have to do almost everything yourself. If you are a beginner, look for a partner who knows the system. If you are not a beginner, look for someone who knows more than you. Classes then will bring a good effect, when every time you learn something. There are all kinds of educational videos on the internet these days. If you and your friends do not know how to do anything at all, some basics you can easily learn it from there.

Change partners

Most martial arts develop the ability to read body language of the opponent and react in time. That is why it is important to change partners regularly. If you practice with the same person you get used to their moves and you lose your guard. The more you practice, the more you will have the opportunity to work with different people.

Mirror on the wall

It would be ideal if you could practice in a room with mirrors. In the mirrors you would see your movements, how certain body parts work, when you perform choking techniques and many others. This is essential to improve your technique. If possible, hang not just one mirror, but several, so that at least one wall is completely mirrored.

Create challenging situations

If you are learning jiu-jitsu for self-defense, why not diversify your technique with new moves and situations. Try to defend yourself if you are cornered, if your opponent is armed, and so on. Constantly learn something new and take your skills to the next level.

Warning

To get a rewarding workout remember to rest, eat right, drink water and get enough sleep. It is better if you train in a group with a trainer and then work on your own to perfect the techniques you learn in class. Don’t forget to ask your coach about the foods you need, the number of hours you sleep, the foods you should avoid.

If you get injured, don’t play the hero and continue training as if nothing had happened. See a doctor. If you need to take a break until your condition improves, you will have to do so.
